Letterboxd Alternatives for Deciding What to Watch With Friends
Letterboxd is built around film discovery and discussion. Its official materials emphasize logging, rating, reviewing, following people, watchlists, and lists. That makes it useful before and after a movie, but not every group needs another public film profile. Some groups need a private way to reach one decision tonight.
This is not a list of Letterboxd clones. The right alternative depends on the job.
Choose ReelAgree for independent group decisions
ReelAgree is designed around private groups, independent reactions, shared matches, and planning after a match. The web app is free and available now. Guests can join and vote; hosting a durable group requires an account.
Limitations matter. ReelAgree does not publish reviews, maintain a critic network, stream content, or show streaming-provider availability. Its iOS and Android releases are still being prepared. Group data and decisions use a Cloudflare-hosted service rather than local-only storage.
Choose Letterboxd for film identity and discussion
Letterboxd is the stronger fit for logging a viewing history, rating and reviewing films, following other members, and maintaining watchlists or themed lists. It is available on the web, iOS, Android, and Apple TV.
Letterboxd says the service remains free, with optional Pro and Patron plans. Its US web pricing showed Pro at $19 per year and Patron at $49 per year on August 29, 2026; taxes and regional prices can differ, so verify the current official pricing before deciding.
For collaboration, Letterboxd's official FAQ says multiple members cannot edit the same list. Lists can be shared and can be private, but that is different from private ballots or a consensus room.
Letterboxd profiles and much member content are designed for social visibility, although individual entries and lists have privacy controls. Review the current privacy notice rather than assuming all activity is either public or private.
Choose JustWatch for provider availability
JustWatch is a streaming guide. Its core strength is showing legal subscription, ad-supported, rental, and purchase options by provider and region. Core features are free, with an optional Pro subscription whose local price is shown in the product.
Custom lists can be shared by link. The reviewed official documentation does not establish collaborative editing, private voting, or consensus matching, so treat it as an availability and list-sharing tool rather than assuming a group-decision workflow.
